How to pack a suitcase...properly

The main mistake when packing a suitcase is that we tend to put too many things in – “just in case” outfits always make their way in. I am sure that if you stop to think about it, you’ll see yourself reflected here. You are going on a trip and you end up buying while there and then wonder why your suitcase won’t close on the way back. If this has happened to you, this post is dedicated to you…

Believe it or not, I like packing suitcases. In fact, my family and friends (you know who you are) have enjoyed this passion of mine for many years. Yes, that’s how it is. You must think I’m a masochist, when I’m packing for someone else to go on a trip, while I stay put.

Many of you think that the worst part about going on a trip is the preparation that goes into it, like packing your bags. For me, it’s the opposite, and I am sure this is due to my past experience. For those who don’t know me: I’ve lived in 5 countries, that’s a lot of moving and packing, which is the main reason for becoming so organized. My main advice is to take the essentials. I love traveling, but I’m a woman and I also love clothes. This is exactly where all the problems start, so I’ve set a few ground rules are that easily followed:

  1. CLOTHES: Stick to a colour theme
I usually pick two or three colours that go well together. A good mix could be jeans, black and white, since they look good with any combination. In this way, I avoid taking all the “just in case” outfit and it’s clear that whatever I take with me will be easily combined and repeated if needed.
  1. SHOES: Take a selection
This depends directly on your destination, but I usually take a pair of heels that go with a few outfits, a pair of ballerina flats and finally, some sneakers such as All Star Converse or New Balance (which are not only comfy but also trendy).
  1. ACCESSORIES: Take the essentials
This is still a problem for me, but I usually categorize them so it is easier: jewelry, scarves and bags. The worst thing is that I’ll make a great selection and then just wear the same things every day. My advice is, keep it simple, neutral colours and few of them.
  1. UNDERWEAR: Put it in linen bags
To avoid an embarrassing situation, in case the airport security guard picks your bag for a random security check, the best option is to put all your underwear in linen bags.

When you’ve decided and selected what you want to take with you (and you’ve folded it on the bed), that is when we start with the last phase: packing the suitcase. Where do I start? Well, I like to look at it like a pyramidal structure. In other words, I put the big things in first and continue until I reach the smallest things which will be placed on the top. Of course, it is also important to fit the shoes in, in the gaps, as if you were playing Tetris.
